The kidney failure risk equation (KFRE), a validated tool for estimating the risk of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in adults, works well for children too, suggests new research published online in JAMA Pediatrics. In a cohort of 603 children with chronic kidney disease (CKD), the four-variable KFRE discriminated the risk of ESRD with a C-statistic of 0.90 for the 1-year risk score, 0.86 for the 2-year score, and 0.81 for the 5-year score. A C-statistic >0.80 suggested strong discrimination.
